Your teeth start growing from the time you are born. When all of your baby teeth have come through, in time you will begin to lose them as they are gradually replaced by your adult teeth. These are the teeth that need to last a lifetime, so good oral hygiene an dental care is essential.  Unfortunately for some, the teeth we are given are not without problems and some form of dental restoration may be needed.

Dental Restoration Cheshire

As the name suggests, dental restoration should, at the very least, restore the teeth to its healthy, pre-damaged condition, or ideally even improve their appearance, enhancing the aesthetic quality of the patient’s smile.  The most common form of dental restoration involves repairing damaged or decayed teeth by cleaning the area then rebuilding it with an appropriate material in an effort to avoid the spread of decay or even the total loss of the affected tooth, otherwise known as fillings.

Amalgam restoration, or silver fillings, are one of the most commonly used.  A blend of mercury, powdered silver and tin are combined and packed into the tooth cavity after some preparation work.  The mixture hardens over time and acts as a substitute for the compromised portion of the tooth.

Given the concerns that some may have about the extreme toxicity of mercury, many prefer to opt for composite restorations instead.  In this case, a composite resin similar in color to the natural tooth is used as a filling, placed in layers until the original structure of the tooth is restored.  Given that the filling sticks to the tooth, this eliminates much of the need for cutting away healthy sections of tooth previously required to keep amalgam fillings in place.  Because it can be color-matched to the surrounding teeth, this is an ideal solution for front teeth in need of dental restoration.

Other restoration techniques such as inlays, crowns, bridges, veneers or dentures, known as indirect restorations, usually require a dental impression to be made of the prepared teeth so that the appropriate restoration can be fabricated to suit.  Once crafted and put into place, they are usually fixed permanently to the teeth.
